SMART GROWTH TOUR OF FORT BENNING
With Special Host John Brent, Chief of the Ft. Benning Environmental Management Division
The tour was held on Monday, April 30, from12:00pm - 4:00pm
Lunch at Post Dining Facility Special
Tour of the new headquarters - McGinnis-Wickham Hall
The building is named McGinnis-Wickham Hall for two Medal of Honor recipients, Spc. Ross A. McGinnis and Cpl. Jerry W. Wickham. The new headquarters building was built to Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, or LEED, silver standards and incorporates sustainability and "green" measures into both its design and construction. By weight, 90 percent of the items removed during the renovation, to include glass, concrete, steel, doors and aluminum, were recycled. Larger windows will take advantage of natural lighting and reduce energy consumption.
Special Tour of the new Simulation Center
Fort Benning's Harmony Church area is home to a $30 million simulations training facility. It is designed to help soldiers get the feel of being behind the wheel of a tank or Bradley fighting vehicle.
Drive by of the Methane Gas TurbineThe Flex Powerstation™, the only turbine to offer both pollution control and energy generation, converts previously wasted landfill gas into 250 kW of renewable electricity, which is enough energy to power 250 homes. The clean energy produced has near-zero emissions and will reduce both the Army's carbon footprint and its bottom line.
King's Pond
Kings Pond is also a favorite fishing spot, with plenty of bass, bluegill, catfish, crappie and sunfish. They are grills, fire pits, an open-air pavilion with seating for up to 32, a playground, rest rooms, primitive camping sites, fishing piers and a boat launch. Pete Swiderek of the environment division (chief conservation branch) at Fort Benning gave a presentation on their conservation efforts on post including the protection of the Red Cockaded Woodpecker.
